Despite quite an interesting set up which could have brought in a prolific character from the Star Wars lore, it appears as though the story of The Acolyte has run its course. According to sources, Lucasfilm and Disney have decided to cancel The Acolyte after just one season.
The decision comes just over one month after the 8 episode season from Leslye Headland, who created, directed and executive produced the series, wrapped on Disney. Now, unfortunately this news is not at all surprising. The show really divided Star Wars fans, and it was subject to a fair amount of hate even before it aired.
According to Deadline, the series actually got off to a reasonably strong start with the first 2 episodes generating 4.8 million views in the first day – making it the biggest series premiere for Disney+ this year. After 5 days, that number rose to 11.1 million. Unfortunately, the rest of the season couldn’t keep that same momentum until the final episode.
Considering that the show cost around $180 million (averaging $22 million per episode), Disney were probably hoping for better results in order to justify a second season.
Synopsis:
“In The Acolyte, an investigation into a shocking crime spree pits a respected Jedi Master (Lee Jung-jae) against a dangerous warrior from his past (Amandla Stenberg). As more clues emerge, they travel down a dark path where sinister forces reveal all is not what it seems.”
