Review
This issue is the introduction to the latest dark series from the Image Comics stable. Abraham “Abe” Morgenstern, the son of Satan, who once believed himself to be immortal has been given a month at the most to live as cancer takes it’s deadly grip leaving Abe with the tough job of sorting out his personal affairs before he returns to Satan. Having lived a colourful life Abe has managed to build a profitable but very shady empire that needs running even when he dies but he can’t pass it on to anyone it must be one of his children, his sons Nero or Jackal or his daughter Bee, all come with their own baggage all having lead already colourful and troubled lives.
The main question would be is Abe even ready to pass on the mantle to one of his offspring? Which of the three could sit at such a volatile table? It’s a strange point of life that Abe finds himself at where he needs to relinquish his hold on the empire, but will he ever be ready? There seems to be something else……
From the look of it we have another great darl series coming out of the Image Comic creative stable, a unique take on the aspect on Heaven and Hell looking at it like a corporate entity rather than spiritually and I actually like it. This is the first time I’ve come across Noah Gardiner as a writer but I’ve been a big fan of Ryan Parrott’s for a while now so I just knew that I’d be in for a treat as soon as I seem he was involved.
The two writing styles perfectly combine to create a story that is building the characters up allowing the story as a whole to find it’s natural path. At the beginning it feels like a normal first issue series builder but as you get to the finale you get the impression that your mind is about to be blown, the anticipation levels for the next issue is definitely at a high.
A dark story needs illustrations that will enhance this darkness and that’s exactly what John J Pearson has done putting his unique visual spin on this story breathing devilish life into each character allowing the reader to start building their visual opinions on them ready for the series a head. I liked the almost realism style combined with the soft almost hand drawn looking tones that really brings the depth out of the story.
Verdict
The first issue in what looks to be another great series from Image Comics. A unique twist on the age old Heaven vs. Hell story which really works. Trust me, there is a lot more to come with this story.
