Black Bear Pictures has confirmed that the UK release of Ava DuVernay’s Origin is on the move. The film, originally planned to debut in February, will now hit UK cinemas on March 8, 2024.
Origin explores the mystery of history, the wonders of romance, and a fight for our future. While investigating the global phenomenon of caste and its dark influence on society, a journalist faces unfathomable personal loss and uncovers the beauty of human resilience.

The film stars Academy Award nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor and is bolstered by an acclaimed supporting cast, which includes Niecy Nash-Betts, Jon Bernthal, Emily Yancy, Vera Farmiga, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Finn Wittrock, Victoria Pedretti, Nick Offerman, Blair Underwood and Audra McDonald. DuVernay produced the film with Paul Garnes for ARRAY Filmworks.
The film had its world premiere in at the 80th Venice Film Festival in September, for which it was nominated for the Golden Lion Award, and then went on to screen at Toronto International Film Festival in mid-September. The film had a limited qualifying release in the US on December 8th from NEON, where it brought in the fourth highest per screen average of 2023. Origin will expand to wider release in the US on January 19th.
