Well… Where do we start. It turns out that Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon universe extends well beyond the films and additional projects that Snyder has planned for his new mythology. In a conversation with Total Film, the director revealed that his Rebel Moon shares a universe with his Army of the Dead Netflix project.
“Army of the Dead has a pretty vast mythology that never made it into the movie.” says Snyder, “There’s actually a character from Rebel Moon in the Army of the Dead animated series that we never did.”
The animated series that Snyder is referring to is Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, and it was originally meant to serve as a prequel to Army of the Dead highlighting the very first days of the zombie outbreak. But how could this unfinished project be connected to Rebel Moon? Well, here’s your answer…
“At one point in the show, they go through a portal into another dimension, and there are characters in that other dimension that they come across.”
“In Rebel Moon, they’re in this bar, and one of the aliens is one of the characters from the animatic. So it’s definitely a shared universe.”
So, what has become of the animated show? That answer is a little bit more vague and ambigious. In his interview with Total Film, Snyder states that this show was something they “never did”, however he later confirms just how far along they were before the project was seemingly abandoned;
“We did all the scripts and the animatics, and all the voices are recorded. So you could watch it, even in its crazy animatic form – you can watch the whole run.”
With Snyder pushing his Rebel Moon universe, have Netflix decided to fully prioritise that rather than the zombie apocalypse? It’s really difficult to tell right now. Not only did Snyder have his animated show, but he also had a sequel planned called Planet of the Dead.
There are a lot of unknowns regarding the Army of the Dead universe, but perhaps we’ll discover more once Rebel Moon is out in the open. As always, we’ll be sure to keep you posted.
Now, just as a quick reminder… Rebel Moon will comprise of two films. Each film will drop on Netflix (with theatrical releases being rumored), then they’ll receive their very own director’s cut at a later date. According to Producer Deborah Snyder, the alternative cuts will be “45 minutes to an hour longer”, and will be a lot more brutal and graphic. Not that we needed convincing, but count us in.
