Godzilla is gearing up for his destructive return to the big screen… And no, we’re not talking about the highly anticipated Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. Toho recently announced the latest instalment in their Godzilla franchise. What’s more, this newly titled Godzilla Minus One will be released in the US on December 1st. The film will premiere in Japan on November 4th. A date has not yet been announced for other territories such as the United Kingdom. Although, we do have our fingers crossed.
To celebrate Godzilla’s return, Toho shared the first poster for Minus One and released a short teaser giving us our best look at Godzilla’s new and updated form.
Check out the poster below:
Directed, written, and produced by Yamazaki Takashi, Godzilla Minus One will mark the 37th film in the entirety of the Godzilla franchise, and the 33rd movie released by Toho. It is currently the 5th movie in the Reiwa era with 2016’s Shin Godzilla being Godzilla’s most recent Toho live-action appearance.
Interestingly, the Japanese release for Minus One is exactly 69 years after the first Gojira movie opened in Japan in 1954. So, what can we expect from Godzilla’s next rampage?
“Set in a post-war Japan, Godzilla Minus One will once again show us a Godzilla that is a terrifying and overwhelming force, which you already get a sense of from the teaser trailer and poster,” said Koji Ueda, President of Toho International, in a statement via Bloody Disgusting, “The concept is that Japan, which had already been devastated by the war, faces a new threat with Godzilla, bringing the country into the ‘minus.’”
What do you think of Godzilla’s look? And how do you think an already broken Japan will beat the walking calamity? Let us know your thoughts in the comments, and make sure you keep your eyes peeled for more Godzilla goodness.
