We’ve been hearing rumours for some time that Alex Kurtzman and the team at Paramount+ were working on a series set at Starfleet Academy. Now the streamer has confirmed that the brand new live-action series is officially on the way.
In a statement released to the press earlier this week the Paramount streamer officially announced a series order. The streamer also confirmed that Kurtzman will act as co-showrunner alongside Noga Landau (The CW’s Nancy Drew).
In a statement to the press, Kurztman and Landau shared their excitement for bringing a brand new Star Trek series to the screen:
“Admission is now open to Starfleet Academy! Explore the galaxy! Captain your destiny! For the first time in over a century, our campus will be re-opened to admit individuals a minimum of 16 Earth years (or species equivalent) who dream of exceeding their physical, mental and spiritual limits, who value friendship, camaraderie, honor and devotion to a cause greater than themselves. The coursework will be rigorous, the instructors among the brightest lights in their respective fields, and those accepted will live and study side-by-side with the most diverse population of students ever admitted. Today we encourage all who share our dreams, goals and values to join a new generation of visionary cadets as they take their first steps toward creating a bright future for us all. Apply today! Ex Astris, Scientia!”
Some teaser art for the show was also shared on the official Trek social media channels:
Not much is known about the series aside from that production will begin in 2024. But a brief description does give us some clues as to what to expect:
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will introduce us to a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they will discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves, and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.
Paired with details in the social media post above, we can see the series will take place as the academy re-opens after a century. This confirms that the show is most likely set in the 32nd century and will follow on from the end of Star Trek: Discovery. This could mean that actors from Discovery could remain with the franchise to take over teaching roles at the Academy.
Fans will of course remember that Silvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) left her role aboard the U.S.S. Discovery to work at Starfleet Academy. There has been no confirmation that Wiseman is involved with the series but we certainly think there could be a bright future ahead for the fan-favourite character.
