Not too long ago, we mentioned that the fight for third place at the box office would be between two giants; James Cameron… And James Cameron. Well, it appears as though we have a winner. Titanic soared back into our theatres for its 25th anniversary and was able to gain just under $50 million worldwide, taking the romantic disaster-movie to $2.242 billion. While it has been just over 9 weeks since the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, the sequel is still proving to be quite the force of nature.
James Cameron’s extraordinary return to Pandora has officially overtaken Titanic after grossing $2.244 billon- $658,456,991 domestically & $1,586,000,000 worldwide. As it stands, Avatar is in first place with $2.9 billion. Avengers: Endgame was able to defeat Thanos, but it couldn’t withstand the might of Pandora after grossing $2.797. Then you have The Way of Water which was just able to sail past Titanic– It was an incredibly close fight, and both fought admirably, but there could only be one winner…
So, James Cameron beat James Cameron. Commiserations to James Cameron, but also congratulations to James Cameron.
Disney took to Instagram to celebrate this most joyous occasion with a lovely message thanking the fans, and there are many to thank.
We’re certain that Mr. Cameron also also been celebrating in his own way, probably opened up a nice bottle of bubbly. How could you not? With only 3 films, James Cameron has grossed just under $8 billion at the worldwide box office. That’s an amazing feat, but it does beg the question… Could Avatar 3 be another money-maker? Well, we’ll have to wait and see, won’t we?
