It was back in September when we last had news on Universal and Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. movie. Back then, the film was on course to hit cinemas across the globe ready for Christmas 2022. But now it seems the team behind the film need a little more time with finishing touches.
Mario’s original creator Shigeru Miyamoto made the announcement of the film’s delay via the official Nintendo Twitter account.
The film stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as the villainous Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Amisen as Cranky Kony, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.
This new animated film will be produced by Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who previously collaborated on the animated series Teen Titans Go! and the film Teen Titans Go! To the Movies. The screenplay of the film will be written by Matthew Fogel, whose writing credits include The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part and the upcoming Illumination film Minions: The Rise of Gru.
Super Mario Bros. will now premiere on April 27, 2022, in North America and April 28, 2022 in Japan.
