This year’s Cinemacon is set to bring some incredibly exciting announcements from various different studios. Sony recently had their panel which confirmed that they plan to further expand their universe surrounding Spider-Man characters. Sony announced that a El Muerto movie is currently in development with Bad Bunny set to star.
Don’t worry, we had to do some research as well. For those who aren’t familiar, El Muerto (aka Juan Carlos), created by Peter David and Roger Cruz in 2006, is a super powered wrestler who once fought Spider-Man in a charity wrestling match. During their match, he almost unmasked Spidey but was accidentally poisoned by a stinger. Spider-Man rescued him and together they fought El Dorado who donned a flashy golden suit.
While El Muerto isn’t the most popular character in the Marvel Universe, it appears as though this particular character was the one that caught Bad Bunny’s eye as he persistently scoured through the universe for a character to play. Sony’s rush to get this film on the go seems to have sprouted from the relationship formed between Bad Bunny and Sony during the production of Brad Pitt’s Bullet Train, which also led to Aaron Taylor-Johnson landing the role of Kraven in Kraven The Hunter.
In a conversation with Sony Pictures’ President Sanford Panitch, who introduced Bad Bunny on stage during Cinemacon, the Latin Grammy winner discussed Bullet Train and the opportunity to play El Muerto saying “It’s amazing, it’s incredible. I love wrestling. I grew up watching wrestling and I’m a wrestler. I’m a former champion so this is why I love this character. I think it’s the perfect role to me and it will be epic.”
According to Sanford Panitch, El Muerto is due to be released on January 12th, 2024. However, the studio is set to push production forward in order to accomodate Bad Bunny’s touring and acting schedules.
