Get ready to toss a coin to your Witcher because a new game is on the way. That’s right, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that they are currently developing a brand new adventure that will kick “off a new saga for the franchise and a new technology partnership with Epic Games.” On top of that, this new installment will be developed using Unreal Engine 5, as well as future versions of Unreal Engine. Another open-World The Witcher game? Say no more.
As of right now, not much is actually known about the game and what it will entail. However, we do know that this game will launch a new chapter in the franchise. Does that mean moving away from Geralt’s world entirely? It’s incredibly hard to say. The medallion shown in the teaser is very similar to the one Geralt received while attending the School of the Wolf (Once he passed the Trial of the Grasses, of course). However, some have speculated that this game could focus on the Cat School.
Considering that there are seven Witcher schools in this universe, this new game could choose to focus primarily on one of those schools or introduce an entirely new one. With this game launching a new saga, there is an opportunity to introduce new and exciting elements.
Check out the teaser poster below:
In terms of technology, this new game marks a new era for CD Projekt Red as they have been using their own rendering technology (REDengine) to build their games since The Witcher 2. The move to Unreal Engine with Epic Games is an exciting change. Tim Sweenet, the Founder and CEO of Epic Games has said that they are “deeply honored by the opportunity to partner with CD PROJEKT RED to push the limits of interactive storytelling and gameplay together, and this effort will benefit the developer community for years to come.”
Considering where we are currently in regards to gaming, graphics, and enhanced gameplay, we can only imagine the possibilites for a new Witcher game. Of course, given the critical acclaim surrounding The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which won 250 Game of the Year awards, it’ll be difficult to create something of that magnitude again. There is also Cyberpunk 2077 to consider as well… While it has definitely improved, the initial launch was a disaster for CD Project Red. But, it appears as though Cyberpunk 2077 has served as a well needed lesson for CD Projekt Red as well as other companies. Hopefully that means that we won’t suffer another blow on the scale of Cyberpunk, but it is important to note that even The Witcher 3 had its fair share of issues to begin with.
What is clear is that the wait for this new entry will be a long one. Exciting, but long. With the announcment out in the open, we’re hoping that small updates will follow shortly. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled for more.
