Last month we brought you news that The CW’s upcoming Gotham Knights pilot would begin shooting in April. With former Gotham executive producer Danny Cannon confirmed to take the helm we expected casting news to start rolling in. Today we got the first of those announcements…
Variety has tonight revealed that actors Fallon Smythe and Tyler DiChiara have joined the cast as Harper and Cullen Row.
Smythe will portray Harper Row, a “blue-haired bisexual” who just happens to be a gifted engineer. A previously revealed character breakdown lists the character as “streetwise, acerbic and often underestimated.” Comic book fans will, of course, know Harper as Bluebird, a sometime side-kick to Batman who emerged during Scott Snyder’s run on the legendary title.
DiChiara will portray an updated version of Harper’s brother, Cullen. In the comics Cullen is bullied at school for being gay. Without their parents, Cullen only has Harper to rely on to watch his back. In the series Cullen has “spent years hiding his transgender identity from an abusive parent”. But now, he’s “tired of being polite and agreeable” and “ready to fight his own battles.”
A synopsis for the proposed series reads:
In the wake of Bruce Wayne’s murder, his rebellious adopted son forges an unlikely alliance with the children of Batman’s enemies when they are all framed for killing the Caped Crusader. And as the city’s most wanted criminals, this renegade band of misfits must fight to clear their names. But in a Gotham with no Dark Knight to protect it, the city descends into the most dangerous it’s ever been. However, hope comes from the most unexpected of places as this team of mismatched fugitives will become its next generation of saviors.
The series is also looking to cast versions of Nightwing (Dick Grayson), Spoiler (Stephanie Brown) and Julia Pennyworth. So expect plenty more announcements in the coming weeks.
