As Lana decides how to cope, Drew, Walter, and Shen think about their own futures after college.
Review
As the new story arc from Mad Cave makes a welcome return with it’s second issue, The Last Session once again transports us to the magical world of D&D as we see our friend group journey further into their story to finish what they hope will be the adventure to end all adventures.
This particular game of D&D the group eant to be perfect with it being the last game they can play together before they all leave for college. The new player to the group Cassandra is making her mark but not in the way you would think, her inexperience is starting to wear thin amongst the group with the potential of undoing the whole adventure they started all those years ago. Being the dungeon master’s girlfriend certainly helps you with a way in but then it does make it virtually impossible for the group to raise their concerns. There is a big chance this last hurrah may go seriously wrong, it’s down to the group to stop it before it gets too late, but can they?
The story itself is developing into a deep story of the importance of good friends and spending time with them, with both issues I’ve read I’ve come away with a nice warm feeling inside, such a gear change compared to the usual stories I normally read. Being a D&D fan I found the characters relatable and enjoyed stepping back into my imagination to bring the magical world to life.
Jasmine Walls returns to the writing of this issue and from now reading both issues so far I can’t see anyone else who could write the story, each character I’d expertly brought to life and given amazing depth thanks to the strength of the arc written. The illustrations from Dozerdraws are brilliant, simple but totally effective keeping with the light hearted fun vibe of the comic. With the creative team in charge I feel the arc is definitely in good hands.
Verdict
A story arc that has surprised me from the start. A comic out of my comfort zone but one I’m happy to have discovered. If you’re not already playing D&D, this one may turn you on to the idea!
