So far, Zack Snyder has taken us to the firery world of Apokolips, to an Zombie-infested Las Vegas and to the world of the Greeks and Gods. But now the director is taking us on a galaxtic adventure across the stars. Snyder’s upcoming project Rebel Moon, an epic and action-packed sci-fi adventure, will be heading straight to Netflix- the home of Snyder’s Army of the Dead.
Snyder will be co-writing the script alongside Shay Hatten, who co-wrote Army of the Dead, and Kurt Johnstad who helped bring 300 to life. The next question to ask is… What exactly is Rebel Moon?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the story follows a peaceful colony situated on the edge of the galaxy who are threatended by the armies of an evil regent called Balisarius. In a bid to fight off the armies of darkness, the colonists send a young woman to recruit warriors from neighboring planets.
“This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” Snyder says. “It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”
Have you watched Army of the Dead yet?
This particular film is actually based on a Star Wars pitch that Snyder developed almost a decade ago. From the sounds of it, the project seems to have approached Star Wars in a more mature manner. According to the report, Snyder and Eric Newman originally wanted to develop it as a series.
“I’ve spent the last two or three years building out this universe. Every corner has to be painted in. I’ve been doing designs, constantly drawing and really cultivating its fertile ground to make this world fully realized.”
It looks like Rebel Moon will be a feature film with production starting in 2022. But if what Snyder says is true, there may be many potential opportunities to create a universe full of interesting stories. Only time will tell. We’re incredibly excited to see what Zack and his team come up with so we’ll be sure to keep you posted on any future developments.
