Published by Mad Cave Studios, Becstar #2 is written by Joe Corallo, with art by Lorenzo Colangeli and letters by Joamette Gil. Cover art is by Sweeny Boo. Becstar is edited by Chris Fernandez and book design is by Miguel Angel Zapata.

The issue is available now in print and on digital where all good comics are sold. Grab your digital copy from Comixology right here.

    Synopsis

Oblivious to the fact that they are being tracked by Ozgar and his Shadow Syndicate goons, Becstar and the Restal-08 crew make their way to the living crystal planet of Nephrite. There, they hope to discover Anyssa’s location and find the missing piece to this intergalactic puzzle.

    Review

In my review of Becstar #1 I talked about how writer Joe Corallo successfully laid the groundwork for an intriguing science-fiction mystery. Going in to issue #2 I had a number of ideas in my mind about where the story could go next. But following that excellent opening I also had high expectations for the continuing story.

Picking up right where the previous issue ended, Becstar #2 moves at breakneck speed. There’s a lot of different elements in play here. From an opening flashback through to a present day game of cat and mouse. Corallo keeps all the players on the board moving throughout the story. In doing so it elevates the level of adrenaline that the story creates for the reader. A huge win in my book.

As we’re still acclimating to this world there is a lot to learn. There are new characters in play, new locations and plot developments aplenty. The booked is crammed full but doesn’t feel overstuffed. There’s a fine line to balance between not enough content and too much but Corallo has definitely found a sweet spot.

The plot of issue #2 circles back to Bec’s character brilliantly. Whilst she is very much the protagonist, issue #1 put Bec in a specific scenario rather than dealing with any backstory of major context. But that much needed context is now squarely in the middle of the series’ main story arc. A perfect way to make the story personal to Bec without compromising any of the previous developments.

Lorenzo Colangeli gets to have even more fun this week by taking the team in to space and to other worlds. The locations allow Colangeli to go crazy with design work. His designs for the alien creatures look great and feel perfectly in keeping with what we’ve seen of the series so far. But more so than that the landscapes still feel alive. Much like the previous issue Becstar has a wonderful visual language which feels immersive and engaging with every page.

    Verdict

Becstar #2 perfectly lives up to the wonderful universe of characters we were introduced to in issue #1.
