Back in January it was revealed that MGM had tapped Lovecraft Country showrunner Misha Green to take over directorial duties on the sequel to 2018’s Tomb Raider. Since then Green has been hard at work on re-drafting the sequel’s script and has now taken to social media to confirm her work is, for now, done.
“Still a long journey to production. Title’s not even approved. But first draft finished!!!” said Green in a post on her Twitter. The tweet was accompanied by an image of the draft’s cover emblazoned with the title Tomb Raider: Obsidian.
https://twitter.com/MishaGreen/status/1393326187296874497Obsidian doesn’t have any obvious connections to the source material. The last film, directed by Roar Uthaug had looked to setup the group Trinity from the recently trilogy of games as the sequel’s potential villain. This new title could signify that Green is looking to take the story in a different direction.
Alicia Vikander is set to return as the title tomb raider, aka Lara Croft, reprising her role from the 2018 film. The sequel had been set to go in to production during the pandemic. It is now not known when shooting will start.
