Jordan Vogt-Roberts is travelling from Skull Island to a universe full of giant robots. The director is set to produce and direct a live-action adaptation of the long-running anime series Mobile Suit Gundam for Legendary and Netflix.
The original series, which aired in 1979, takes us to the Universal Century. In this futuristic timeline human colonies battle for independence from Earth. That’s where our beloved Mobile Suits come in. If you’re going to fight a war, you may as well use a bunch of giant robots. After the release of the original series, the universe expended into a massive franchise consisting of additional series like Iron-Blooded Orphans, various manga, and video games. There’s even an 18-metre walking Gundam (RX-78-2) in Yokohama.

According to Variety, the screenplay is being written by comic book writer Brian K. Vaughan, who will also serve as an executive producer. Legendary’s Cale Boyter is overseeing the project along with Sunrise- the Japanese animation studio behind the Gundam franchise.
As of now, there’s no word on what material the film will adapt. The problem is that there’s so much material to choose from. However, we’re under the impression that the film will most likely take a lot of from the original series. But there is a chance that they could incorporate and cherry-pick elements from other shows.
