Don’t worry, you read the headline correctly. Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are indeed working on a film adaptation of the hugely successful and popular game Ghost of Tsushima. What’s even better is that the film already has a director on board- John Wick‘s Chad Stahelski.
When we mention video game adaptations, most of us will groan and moan. In the past, it has never turned out particularly well. However, Sonic was a decent step in the right direction and Mortal Kombat may prove to reinvigorate our confidence in adaptations.
Honestly, Ghost of Tsushima is such a fantastic choice in terms of adaptations. Not only does its fairly linear story help when it comes to prioritization, but it is such a beautiful and cinematic game which would perfectly suit the cinema screen. There are also some incredibly positive possibilities with this particular project. Remember just last month, the lead developers behind Ghost of Tsushima, Nate Fox and Jason Connel, were made tourist ambassadors for the island. On top of that, the game’s popularity led to some truly wonderful charity work that helped restore the Torii gate. Who knows what a film could do for the Island of Tsushima.

It may be unlikely, but we think it would be fantastic if the film did some shooting on the island of Tsushima. Whether it’s for establishing shots or even some very small scenes, the island itself plays a massive role in the narrative. The only way to truly honor that would be to visit the island and show people its stunning landscapes.
Chad Stahelski, Alex Young and Jason Spitz are producing via their company 87Eleven Entertainment. While Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan will produce through PlayStation Productions. In addition to that, Sucker Punch Productions will serve as Executive Producers.
“We’re excited to be partnering with Chad and 87Eleven Entertainment, to bring their vision of Jin’s story to the big screen. We love working with creative partners like Chad, who have a passion for our games, ensuring we can create rich adaptations that will excite our fans and new audiences.” said Asad Qizilbash, Head of PlayStation Productions.
This is incredibly exciting news and we can’t wait to see how this develops. We’ll be sure to keep you posted so keep your eyes peeled. Are you excited for a live-action Ghost of Tsushima movie? Let us know in the comments.
