Variety has this evening broken the news that Warner Bros. has tapped Promising Young Woman writer/director Emerald Fennell to pen the script for Zatanna movie.
The news, also confirmed by Deadline, puts the recent WGA award winner in charge of bringing part of DC’s magical realm to the big screen for the first time. It is currently unclear if Fennell will also direct the project. Zatanna is being overseen by J.J. Abrams Bad Robot production company. Bad Robot is also currently developing Justice League Dark projects for HBO Max and the recently announced Superman film.
The character was created by Gardner Fox and artist Murphy Anderson, making her debut in November 1964’s Hawkman. Much like her father, Zatara, she has many magical powers. Zatanna has been involved with the Justice League as well as the Justice League Dark. She has childhood connections with Batman and has been romantically linked to John Constantine throughout her history.
The deal for Fennell to writer the script has reportedly been in place for some time. No release dates or casting announcements have been made as yet.
