It was recently confirmed that The CW’s Black Lightning will be coming to an end with season 4. The shock announcement has been followed by the news that series original China Anne McClain was leaving the series regardless of whether it was to continue or not.
McClain posted a length video on social media confirming that she will have a reduced presence in season 4 as the series draws to a close. Watch her full announcement in the player below:
“What I did know and have known along with the rest of the cast since before we even started shooting this season is that I am leaving the show and was leaving the show,” said McClain. “This was going to be my last season, regardless of if it went on or not. For different reasons, that, to be honest, I don’t want to go into. I just want y’all to trust me on it.”
It seems that there’s no bad blood between McClain and the production team on Black Lightning or the creatives at The CW:
“I’m not leaving because I had a terrible time working at the CW,” McClain continued. “I like the CW. I like [CW network president] Mark Pedowitz, I like [Warner Bros. president] Peter Roth, [EP] Greg Berlanti, I love [showrunner] Salim [Akil], I always will. He gets it. And people that actually know me… they know why I make the decisions that I make.”
Black Lightning stars Cress Williams, China Anne McClain, Nafessa Williams and Christine Adams. The series, which airs internationally on Netflix, returns to screens on February 8, 2021.
