According to Variety, Director of Crazy Rich Asians Jon M. Chu is in talks to helm Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation which will bring Experiment 626 to life.
That’s right, Disney’s Lilo & Stitch from 2002 is the next classic to receive the “live-action” treatment. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich from Rideback, who helped produce 2019’s Aladdin, will produce the upcoming project while Ryan Halprin will serve as an executive producer.
As of now, nothing else has been revealed. No cast. No date. Nothing. Even this hasn’t been confirmed yet. So it looks as though we may have quite a bit of waiting to do before we receive anything concrete.
One thing that will be interesting to see is whether they attempt to adapt just the first film or pave a way to adapt the sequels. Take Lion King and Aladdin for example, it didn’t take them long before they announced a sequel for both. They could use this opportunity to introduce Jumba’s various genetic experiments. Maybe Angel or 627.
