The reimagined version of Disney’s Lion King managed to gross over $1.65 billion worldwide. It even became the 9th highest grossing movie of all time. Considering its worldwide success, it isn’t a complete surprise that Disney would want to continue their journey through the “live-action” realm.
Having said that, we didn’t really expect them to announce a Lion King sequel. Despite there being an animated sequel and a prequel, we didn’t anticipate them to stay with Simba and his pride.
According to Deadline, Lion King is getting a sequel that will be directed by Barry Jenkins- the Oscar-winning director behind Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk. The script is being written by Jeff Nathanson who penned the 2019 adaptation with Favreau. Not much is known about the actual film itself. Will it follow the straight-to-video Simba’s Pride.
However, the Deadline report seems to indicate that it will be a sequel and a prequel. Focusing on giving us more of a backstory for Mufasa. This could also mean that we see a younger version of Scar. This would also mean a potential look at the clash between the two brothers. If they go down the route of bringing Kovu and Kiara, it would make sense for them to dive deep into the strained relationship between Scar and Mufasa.
