STAR WARS showcases new HIGH REPUBLIC lightsaber

Star Wars: The High Republic just debuted a brand new lightsaber!

Many deemed Kylo Ren’s lightsaber as “impractical” and they’re probably right. However, it was an awesome design and it’s practicality didn’t stop fans from falling in love with the design. But just when you thought it couldn’t get any stranger than a crossguard lightsaber, Star Wars: The High Republic has swooped in with a brand new lightsaber.

When we think of Jedi Knights, we imagine the mighty robes and a gleaming lightsaber. But The High Republic has decided to tap into our understanding of the traditional “Knight”. Think King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. Immediately, our thoughts fall to Excalibur- the legendary sword of King Arthur. Now, what would happen if Excalibur was a lightsaber? Well, The High Republic has the answer.

Check it out!

This gorgeous weapon, Courtesy of the upcoming The Lightsaber Collection, belongs to Jedi Master Stellan Gios. The saber features fork-line extensions that fold down to create a crossguard lightsaber when ignited. When the extensions are up, it can easily be attached to a belt. Unlike a majority of lightsabers, this one comes with a very intricate clip.

We absolutely love this design. It seems as though The High Republic will be experimenting a bit more in terms of visuals so we are incredibly excited to see what else they bring to Star Wars. Disney Publishing Illustration Manager Jeff R. Thomas had this to say about the new design:

“What would a lightsaber version of Excalibur look like? I started sketching and came up with a silhouette I really liked. But the practicality of holstering/sheathing it nagged at me until I had the idea that the crossguard didn’t have to be stationary. Perhaps it could activate or deactivate with the saber. So after some more sketches and some back and forth with Lucasfilm, it was decided that the crossguard would activate as opposed to always being open, which would give the saber the slimmer silhouette while holstered and would lend itself to some great visuals when activating.”

Pretty cool, right? Let us know your thoughts in the comments. If you love lightsabers like we do, we highly recommend checking the upcoming Darth Sideous lightsaber.
