It will truly be a wonder if these films make it to the big screen before 2020 is over!
According to Deadline, Wonder Woman 1984 is looking to be delayed from its release date of October 2, which was an already delayed release from its initial May date. It has now been confirmed that WW84 is now shifting to December 25…a Christmas day release!
Director Patty Jenkins has stated, “Because I know how important it is to bring this movie to you on a big screen when all of us can share the experience together, I’m hopeful you won’t mind waiting just a little bit longer. With the new date on Christmas Day, we can’t wait to spend the holidays with you!” We have seen Aquaman (2018) become the DCEU’s highest grossing film released during the Christmas period, so this could prove a hugely successful move on Warner Bros part!
The further delay is likely a response to Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and its low box office take when it was released in theatres in August as well, showing that audiences are still hesitant to go back to the cinema in the middle of a pandemic.
Marvel’s next big screen film, Black Widow is also rumored to have been delayed from its established November release.
WW84 and Black Widow are not the only films facing delays; Dune is starting to look like it will lose its slot in theatres on December 18 and instead be pushed back to 2021, as Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures are also the company behind Dune but WW84 appears to be the film with the most faith holding onto it. It seems unlikely that a company will release two major blockbuster films within the same week. DC and Warner Bros are likely relying on the success of Wonder Woman (2017) to boost theatre-goers and box office income for its highly anticipated sequel.
With companies like Disney releasing their highly anticipated Mulan remake on their streaming service as opposed to theatres during September, it is unknown whether they will do the same with Black Widow or whether Marvel will take a chance for this film, with many other Marvel films before this bringing in billions from the box office.
With many other films set to drive us into the cinema, these three films will be crucial to the production companies, telling us if cinema has been revived or if we have yet to wait until life returns to a bit more normalcy.
