Recently an audition tape for season 2 of Batwoman featuring actress Jemma Hendricks surfaced online. Hendricks, taped from home, was auditioning for the role of Ryan Wilder. The character set to take over from Kate Kane in season 2 following Ruby Roses’s exit.

In the video Hendrick’s version of Wilder is seen speaking with members of the Bat-team and discussing how and why she stole the Batwoman suit.

“Kate was our friend,” says an off-screen voice, likely Luke Fox. “And we’re not about to let someone undo all the good she’s done for this city by rewriting her legacy.”

“I’m not rewriting it,” Wilder states. “I’m finishing it.”

The dialogue has led many to believe that the series would be killing off Kate’s character as a way of inspiring Wilder to take over the mantle. But now, showrunner Caroline Dries, has released a statement committing to not falling in to the “Bury Your Gays” TV trop.

“As a lesbian who’s been working as a writer for the past fifteen years, I’m well aware of the “Bury Your Gays” trope and I have no interest in participating in it,” says Dries, “That’s why it’s important to me as the showrunner to clarify any misinformation out there about Kate Kane and recasting Batwoman. Like you, I love Kate Kane – she’s the reason I wanted to do the show.  We’ll never erase her.  In fact, her disappearance will be one of the mysteries of season two.  I don’t want to give away any of our surprises, but to all our devoted fans, please know that LGBTQ+ justice is at the very core of what Batwoman is and we have no intention of abandoning that.”

Batwoman season one stars Ruby Rose as Kate Kane/Batwoman. The series co-stars Dougray Scott, Elizabeth Anweis, Meagan Tandy, Camrus Johnson, Nicole Kang and Rachel Skarsten.
