In the wake of the worldwide closure of cinemas the big studios have faced constant questioning from fans as to whether big upcoming films will still get theatrical releases.
We’ve seen Universal dropping Trolls World Tour direct to video-on-demand services with Warner Bros. now following suit with SCOOB!. WB, in particular, has faced heavy questioning around the highly anticipated DC film Wonder Woman 1984 and the latest from Christopher Nolan, Tenet.
But now Warner Bros. chief Ann Sarnoff has issued a statement clarifying the studio’s position and assuring investors that they are still “committed to the cinematic experience.”
“We are committed to — and are excited about — releasing Tenet in theaters this summer or whenever theaters reopen. We remain supportive of the theatrical experience and our exhibition partners, and are confident that our tentpole titles, including Tenet and Wonder Woman 1984, are exactly the type of films that will have people eager to return to theaters,” said Sarnoff.
“Theatrical films have always been a major part of the our ecosystem,” added WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey. “I fully expect that as we evaluate our business going forward, we will continue to champion creative work that is worthy of the theatrical experience.”
Tenet is currently due for release on July 17, 2020 with Wonder Woman 1984 set to hit cinemas on August 14, 2020.
