Review

Following what was an enticing first issue (reviewed here) Daredevil #2 sets odd to add some real context to the world of the Man Without Fear. Less action packed and more talky it fleshes out the supporting cast and sets the scene for plenty more action to come.

Zdarsky has setup an interesting world and an even more interesting dilemma for the character. He’s been out of action for a while and this is no longer his domain.

As much as the audience needs to get reacquainted with the world so does the character. With that in mind Zdarsky takes us on a journey through the world together. With King Pin as the Mayor of New York there’s plenty to agonise Matt Murdock and spring him in to action.

We’re also seeing in to the world via Detective North. His methods might be a little harsh but it wouldn’t be Daredevil without some kind of cop out for blood.

That being said this issue was a little slow for me. It’s not boring, there’s just less of what I enjoyed about the first issue.

I particularly enjoyed Daredevil watching over Fisk waiting for the “telltale skip” in his heartbeat which never comes. Though only a short scene it emphasises how out of touch Matt is with the world.

Also the scene where Matt visits the church is very classic Daredevil. It evokes something much more akin to the characters golden age and was a great touch amongst all of the world building.

Of course there’s a dramatic conclusion to jump off in to issue #3 and the final splash page is something of a jaw dropper.

The artwork is absolutely on par with the previous issue. There’s plenty of depth to the world to keep the pages turning. The colour palette of the series is a real highlight for me. This series features some stark reds, as you would expect, but also the dark and murky scenes are quite stunning.

Verdict

Though not as exciting as the opening issue, Daredevil #2 is an exercise in world building that will certainly keep fans turning the pages right up to its jaw dropping conclusion.
