Danny Cannon offers update on PENNYWORTH

Alfred Pennyworth (DC Comics)

Danny Cannon was recently on hand for a Television Critics Association panel celebrating the end of Gotham. Whilst in attendance the Executive Producer was also asked about his upcoming Alfred-centric series Pennyworth.

The series has recently filmed its pilot at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden outside London and is preparing to debut on screens later in 2019.

Discussing the tone of the series Cannon said “It’s twentysomething years before Gotham, it’s a very different world. This is the DC version of 1960s London.”

“13 degrees history is different: It’s not the England we know,” he continued. “It looks and feels like, but if you look a little closer, [you ask], ‘Why is that like that? Why is that building there? What war is he talking about?'”

Cannon added that he hopes to deliver an “unhinged, R-rated” series, he also confirmed that we won’t see any classic Batman villains on the show which will instead focus on “archetypal villains and classic villains of British literature; they’re all available to us.”

“Pennyworth is based on DC characters created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger. It follows Bruce Wayne’s legendary butler, Alfred Pennyworth, a former British SAS soldier who forms a security company and goes to work with Thomas Wayne, Bruce’s billionaire father, in 1960’s London. Production will begin later this year, with a series premiere slated for 2019.”

Pennyworth stars Jack Bannon as Alfred Pennyworth with Ben Aldridge as Thomas Wayne, Paloma Faith as Bet Sykes, Ryan Fletcher as Dave Boy, and Hainsley Lloyd Bennett as Bazza.
