The Oscars aren’t known for recognising science-fiction or superhero movies. Outside of the special effects, make-up and sound categories these types of films are entirely snubbed by the awards ceremony.
The judging board behind the Oscars as now decided to add a new category to help these kinds of films get more awards show exposure. From next year the ceremony will include the “Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film” award.
This should open up the chance for movies like Black Panther and last years Wonder Woman to pick up some actual mainstream Oscars glory.
What do you think? A cheap attempt to cash in on audiences? Or a clever way to bring in less hard hitting films to awards season?
