It seems the success of Star Trek: Discovery for CBS and Netflix may have triggered a resurgence in the franchise TV universe.
Several mainstream news sites (including Variety) are reporting that new show runner Alex Kurtzman has signed a multi-year deal to supervise the expansion of the Discovery universe.
This role will see him oversee the development of new series and ‘other content’ set within the Star Trek universe.
Variety reports on four potential series that Kurtzman could be overseeing. The first is said to come from the showrunners of Hulu and Marvel’s Runaways, Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz. This series is said to be set at Starfleet Academy and be aimed at a younger audience.
Meanwhile, two of the other projects are currently being described as mini-series. One is said to be based on the Wrath of Khan storyline, whilst we have no details on the other. It is also rumoured that a new animated series is in the works.
