AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR writers originally included the ‘snap’ in Avengers 4

Thanos’ finger snap will go down in history as one of the most chilling moments in cinema. The consequences of that snap will be felt across the MCU for a long time to come.
But now in a new interview writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have discussed the development of that moment in the script. In an interview with the NY Times via ComicBookMovie the writers discussed the snap originally appearing in Avengers 4 rather than Infinity War:
“What we realized is, it would feel more like a cliffhanger than we intended,” Markus explained, saying that they wanted both instalments to feel distinctive from each other. Had the snap ended up happening in Avengers 4, “it would be a continuation of exactly what you were watching before.”
It’s not clear how Avengers: Infinity War would have ended had the snap been saved but including it in that movie meant “[they] went all the way to a tragic ending. And then one where mysterious things happen that I can’t tell you about,” Markus added referring to the events of 2019’s Avengers 4.“It’s really, I think, difficult to predict where we go next,” McFeely said in regards to that movie delivering surprises that fans aren’t expecting. “I read a tweet this morning that said, ‘Good morning to everyone, except Markus and McFeely,'” he concludes, referring to some of the fan backlash. “We still argue that ‘Infinity War’ is its own, complete film. It’s just the one where the bad guy wins.”
An unprecedented cinematic journey ten years in the making and spanning the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Infinity War” brings to the screen the ultimate, deadliest showdown of all time. The Avengers and their Super Hero allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe.
Anthony and Joe Russo direct the film, which is produced by Kevin Feige. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Michael Grillo and Stan Lee are the executive producers. Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely wrote the screenplay. “Avengers: Infinity War” releases in U.S. theaters on May 4, 2018.
