‘Star Trek: Discovery’ EP talks season finale reveals (spoilers ahead)

Last night CBS All Access aired the season 1 finale of Star Trek: Discovery. That means for those of us outside North America it will be available on Netflix from this morning. The fifteen episode season has proved a hit with fans and critics alike and wasted no time in pulling in one finale reveal ahead of season 2.

In the closing moments of ‘Will You Take My Hand?’ the crew of the USS Discovery received a distress call from another Federation ship. That ship is none other than the Enterprise under the command of Captain Pike.

This of course raises huge questions about where the Enterprise is in her mission. Who are her crew? Could Burnham be about to come face-to-face with her brother Spock? Star Trek: Discovery EP Alex Kurtzman sat down with Variety to discuss the twist.

“The show is called ‘Discovery.’ It’s not ‘Enterprise,’” Kurtzman said. “So yes, the Enterprise will play a part  of Season 2 but it will absolutely not overshadow Discovery. And I think with Enterprise’s arrival in the finale we recognize that the audience has a lot of questions about our synchronicity with the original series, which really means or synchronicity with canon. So the promise of the Enterprise holds the answers to a lot of those questions, including Spock’s relationship with his half-sister who he’s never mentioned. Which does not necessarily mean you’re going to see Spock, just that we owe an answer to that question.”

Kurtzman also discussed how Discovery’s maiden voyage was reverse engineered to bring her to her place in the finale.

“The whole season was reverse engineered from the ending that we know that we wanted,” Kurtzman said. “Really the big driver there was [Burnham’s] arc and the confusion about how and why she decided to mutiny in the pilot to the absolute certainty that it was the only way to protect the ideals of the Federation. She doesn’t literally mutiny, but she does threaten it in the finale because she understands that it’s much more important to protect those ideals than to protect herself.”

What did you think of the twist? Are you excited for the show moving in to season 2?

Star Trek, one of the most iconic and influential global television franchises, returns to television 50 years after it first premiered with STAR TREK: DISCOVERY. The series will feature a new ship, new characters and new missions, while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers. The series will premiere on the CBS Television Network with all subsequent episodes available on CBS All Access, the Network’s digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service, and will be distributed concurrently by CBS Studios International on Netflix in 188 countries and in Canada on Bell Media’s Space channel and OTT service CraveTV.

Star Trek: Discovery is produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Alex Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout, Bryan Fuller’s Living Dead Guy Productions and Roddenberry Entertainment. Alex Kurtzman, Bryan Fuller, Heather Kadin, Gretchen J. Berg & Aaron Harberts, Akiva Goldsman, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth serve as executive producers.

The series will star Sonequa Martin-Green in the lead role, as well as James Frain as Sarek, Doug Jones as Lt. Saru, Anthony Rapp as Lt. Stamets, Michelle Yeoh as Captain Georgiou of the Discovery, and Shazad Latif as Klingon officer Kol.
