Some good news for Power Rangers fans this morning. With the film hitting Blu-ray and DVD in North America yesterday director Dean Israelite has been doing some new press interviews.
Many have asked about the chances for a sequel given the lacklustre box office performance of the first film. Speaking with Screenrant Israelite stated “It’s obviously not up to me, but I know Lionsgate and Saban are talking in earnest about it, and are trying to push forward. They’re having a discussion.”
Power Rangers total worldwide gross sits at $140.2m. It made a little over $85m in North America and only $54.8m internationally. Whilst not an unmitigated disaster it wasn’t the start that Lionsgate were hoping for.
Some reviewers (us included) were kind to Power Rangers whilst others felt the film did not live up to the TV series. The film is available on all formats in North America now and hits shelves in the UK on July 31.
Sabans Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove (and the world) is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.
Directed by Dean Israelite, Saban’s Power Rangers stars Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, featuring Bill Hader, with Bryan Cranston and Elizabeth Banks. The screenplay is by John Gatins. Story is by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless and Michele Mulroney and Kieran Mulroney. Producers are Power Rangers creator Haim Saban, Brian Casentini, Wyck Godfrey, and Marty Bowen.
