“YEAR ONE” part five! The threat is named, and now Wonder Woman and her new allies must rise to meet the coming darkness.

Of the two strings of storytelling currently taking place in ‘Wonder Woman’ I have to say that ‘Year One’ is proving to be the much more compelling story.

Five issues in and this story is by no means rushing towards its conclusion. Instead Rucka is focussing heavily on the characters and all the small moments which build Diana up to take on the name of Wonder Woman.

This issue follows the fallout of her first public fight with criminals. With the press intrigued and labelling her superwoman there’s time for a lot of exposition and discussion around who she is and whether she is safe to have around.

What Rucka hasn’t shied away from is exposing a more real-world reaction to this god-like character arriving in the human world. In years gone by these characters would be universally accepted but with films like the current DCEU slate challenging those perceptions its good to see the comics follow suit.

This is the type of slow burn story which may put off some fans who prefer instant gratification from their storytelling. If you have the patience for a real character driven story then ‘Year One’ will be much more up your street.

‘Year One’ continues to look great. The characters in this story look great, their facial expressions convey genuine emotion and bring a real weight to the story.

Interstingly the locales in ‘Year One’ are very recognisable, particularly to anybody living in San Diego (or who has attended SDCC). Recreating real locations has also given this story a great grounding in the real world.

    Verdict

‘Wonder Woman’ #12 is another great chapter in the on-going ‘Year One’ saga. A fair mix of action and character with a good twist to really push the narrative forwards.
