Whilst appearing at the CBS TCA panel last night Bryan Fuller finally gave some more detail on ‘Star Trek: Discovery’.
Fuller had been expected to discuss the show in detail at San Diego Comic Con in July. Although a short teaser trailer (below) was released during the convention no solid details on the shows storyline were unveiled.
Fuller confirmed that the show will be headlined by a female character. Although unlike ‘Star Trek: Voyager’ this female will be a Lieutenant rather than Captain of the ship.
The show is, of course, also looking to cast for a male lead. No details on his Starfleet ranking as yet. Interestingly Fuller noted that they are looking to cast ‘diverse’ actors for both roles.
The most reported on quote from his presentation picks up on the inclusion of aliens and the sexual diversity of the series:
“We’ll probably have a few more aliens than you typically have on the show. We wanted to paint a picture of Starfleet where we’re going to have new exciting aliens and also new imagining of existing aliens, Absolutely we’re having a gay character,”
‘Star Trek: Discovery’ is in production now and will premiere on CBS in January 2017. The pilot episode will air on the CBS network before the show moves to CBS All Access streaming service.
Netflix owns the rights to screen the series in 188 countries outside of the US.
The series is produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout, Fuller’s Living Dead Guy Productions and Roddenberry Entertainment. Alex Kurtzman, Bryan Fuller, Heather Kadin, Gretchen Berg & Aaron Harberts, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth will serve as executive producers.
