‘Wonder Woman’ sinks ‘The Mummy’ at the box office

Another weekend at the box office has drawn to a close. As the dust settles and the receipts are counted it is Wonder Woman who has once again come out on top.

Entering its second weekend the press placed Wonder Woman somewhere in the $50-$60m window as the North American box office. Taking an estimated $15.8m on Friday, $24.3m on Saturday and $17m on Sunday the film crossed the $200m mark. If the estimates are correct Wonder Woman made $57.2.m from a record breaking 45% drop week-to-week.

Typically comic book movies see a drop in the 50-60% range in their second weekend. 45% is lowest drop for a comic book movie in its second weekend since Tobey Maguire first played Spider-Man in 2002. $57.2m is DC Comics third largest second weekend falling behind The Dark Knight ($75.1m) and The Dark Knight Rises ($62.1m). It’s domestic totally is estimated at $205m.

Internationally Wonder Woman made another $58.1m holding the number one spot in several countries, the UK included. Its international gross now sits at $230.2m. Put that together with the North American gross and Wonder Woman remains the number one film worldwide with a total gross of $435.2m!

It’s now entirely possibly the film could outgross the previous three entries in the DCEU at the North American box office.

Wonder Woman faced a big threat this week at the hands of Universal Pictures The Mummy. Though the latter stumbled with reviews (us included) it was forecast to open well internationally. Box office estimates claimed the film could make $35-$40m in North America but poor word of mouth hampered its chances. In the end the Tom Cruise vehicle was able to scrape to $32.2m. As the poor word of mouth continues its unlikely The Mummy will hold well in its second weekend. Look out for a large drop next week.

The story is a little different in the international market. Opening in 63 territories around the world – essentially a full rollout in its opening weened – The Mummy was able to take the number one spot in 52 of them. The film was able to break free of international expectations and race to $141.8m. Combined with the small numbers from North America The Mummy has made it to $174m in its first three days at the box office.

Though it seems small $174m is actually the biggest opening weekend in the entire of Tom Cruise’s career. Expect Universal to lorde the international success of a film which boasts a truly global setting and international cast. The Mummy may not be the best start to Universal’s Dark Universe but it’s by no means a financial failure right out of the gate.
