Yesterday, James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water passed Top Gun: Maverick as the highest grossing film of 2022 after crossing $1.5B at the worldwide box office. So, after just 3 weeks since it’s debut The Way of Water is not only the highest grossing movie of 2022, it is also the 9th highest grossing movie of all time.
Top Gun: Maverick did an outstanding job in cinema, grossing $1.4B after a lengthy theatrical run. With Avatar: The Way of Water smashing records on a weekly bases, it’s difficult to predict where it will end. However, its cinema run is definitely far from over, so it’s likely that the sequel will dethrone a few more tentpole movies. Will it join Avatar at the top? Only time will tell.
The good news doesn’t stop there…
With The Way of Water sailing past $1.5B, James Cameron has achieved a state of ultimate power. He is now the only director in history to have three films cross the $1.5B mark. It’s also worth mentioning that all 3 movies are now sat firmly in the top ten highest grossing movies of all time- Avatar, Titanic, and The Way of Water. It’s a very, very good day for James Cameron and everyone involved in the Avatar franchise.
