JUNGLE CRUISE Sails To The Top Of The Box Office, THE SUICIDE SQUAD Opens Strong Internationally

As expected, the weekend box office belonged to Disney’s Jungle Cruise which opened just short of $62M. But the international headlines belong to Warner Bros. The Suicide Squad which began what looks to be a strong rollout.

At home in the US it was without doubt that Jungle Cruise would steal the crown. But with all eyes on the film’s dual release strategy it comes as no surprise that the overall box office was low. Going in to the weekend the Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt co-starer was forecast upwards of $40M. When final numbers were counted it managed to rake in a sturdy, but low, $34.2M.

Disney will no doubt tout the opening as a much more impressive $64.2M, tacking on the circa $30M made via Disney+ Premier Access.

Despite earning a decidedly average review score of 63% on Rotten Tomatoes opening weekend audiences scored the film with an A- CinemaScore. But given the over $200M budget, Jungle Cruise has a way to go based off that $61.8M global theatrical opening.

Second place goes to A24’s hotly anticipated The Green Knight which earned $6.78M. Scoring a $2,431 per-screen average in 2,790 screens. The film has yet to open in international markets but has also recently been pulled from release here in the UK. It’s future is currently uncertain.

Landing in third place this week is director M. Night Shyamalan’s Old. In its second week at the box office the film narrowly missed out on second place, bringing in an estimated $6.76M. A mere $20K below The Green Knight.

It’s two-week domestic total now rests at $30.6M. To date, Old has brought in an estimated $17.9M from international territories, bringing its worldwide cume to $48.5M.

Marvel Studios’ Black Widow holds on in fourth place this week adding a further $6.4M to its tally. In its fourth weekend the film fell a further 44.7% with its domestic total now resting at just under $167.1M. Globally the 24th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise has now grossed a touch under $343.6M.

Rounding out the top five this week is Focus Features Stillwater starring Matt Damon. The film debuted with a healthy $5.1M domestic opening. The film premiered last month at the Cannes Film Festival and benefits from some serious buzz for both its cast and director.

Internationally, all eyes were on Warner Bros. The Suicide Squad which opened in just 5 markets. The James Gunn directed DC pictures easily topped Jungle Cruise here in the UK with a cool $4.2M. Cruise settles for second place with $3M. With all 5 markets combined Task Force X has opened with $7M ahead of its rollout across the rest of the globe this week.
