    Synopsis

Heroes, villains and gods have fallen. Cities have collapsed. The virus threatens to reach below the waves and even to the island of Themyscira. The race to save planet Earth is on! The surviving members of the Justice League have learned the secret to the spread of the virus, but is it already too late to stop it?

    Review

So we have arrived at DCeased #3 and the half-way point in the series. At this stage Tom Taylor needed to prove that the weight of issues one and two wasn’t just a lucky break and that this series can really hold its own for the remainder of its run.

Issue #3 does that by telling an emotional story based around Clark. He is very much the focal point of this issue following the death of Bruce, Dick and Tim.

The issue has emotional bookends with Alfred at one end and Superman in the other and both perfectly accentuate the overall arc of the story. As fans we get some closure with Batman before we move on to the chaos at hand.

Around the Clark scenes we get to keep an eye on Harley Quinn as she satisfies her own need for psychological healing and then runs in to an awesome – all female – zombie cameo.

Taylor is weaving in the wider DC Universe so well to this story. Of course seeing characters we know in their infected state is always going to be awesome but those scenes are played so well here that they never become gimmicky.

I’m still so impressed at how DCeased has carried itself off as a serious story within the DC Universe and not just as a zombie gimmick.

But as I said this issue belongs to Clark. His emotional arc as he tries to move the un-infected to safety is harrowing. He’s torn between protecting his family, clearing the infected out of The Daily Planet building and also going “home”.

The scenes in The Daily Planet are some of the most heartbreaking, or so I thought that that stage, particularly as Clark describes working with some of those whom he is tossing aside to clear a path for Lois, Jon, Damian and the others.

But it’s when Clark goes home to Smallville to find his parents that the book really hits you in the feels. But no spoilers for the ending here.

    Verdict

DCeased #3 is another emotional rollercoaster in the series. It emphasises the impact of the outbreak on the Justice League and wider DC Universe by bringing in some great cameos. It also builds to a climax so emotional you will be reaching for the tissues!

    9/10

DCeased #3 is written by Tom Taylor with pencils by Trevor Hairsine, inks by Stefano Guadiano and colours by Rainier Beredo.
