The CAPTAIN MARVEL reviews have arrived, but is it the success Marvel was hoping for?

Yesterday the embargo finally lifted on reviews of Marvel’s Captain Marvel. Did the movie live up to the expectations of reviewers? Did it tank? No of course it didn’t.

Despite all the of the negative press (just check out the comments on some of our Cap Marvel YouTube vids) the movie has been overly reviewed well. The score currently sites at 84% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

Whilst many do point to the story being another generic Marvel origin story the cast and characters lift the movie up to become something much more enjoyable.

We’re seeing the movie Friday night and will bring you our review over the weekend. But in the meantime here’s what some of the other reviewers had to say.

    San Francisco Chronicle

Good thing it’s still March. “Captain Marvel” would have made a weak start to the summer blockbuster season. (2/4)

    Rolling Stone

You could ding it for convoluted plotting and a retro style that flattens the usual Marvel fireworks. But a dynamite Brie Larson gives hell to cosmic villains and sexist trolls. And an orange feline named Goose is the best movie cat ever! (4/5)

    IndieWire

Neither a blast from the past, nor an inspiring glimpse into the future, at the end of the day it’s just another Marvel movie. And not a particularly good one, at that. (C-)

    TIME Magazine

Larson does get a few opportunities in Captain Marvel to be that regular, flawed-but-strong human-there just aren’t enough of them, and they’re hardly the focus of the movie.

    TheWrap

Absolutely grounds itself in the ’90s, even evoking a riot grrrl-adjacent feeling, buoyed by a soundtrack that features almost exclusively rock fronted by female voices – a reminder of an era that showed so much promise for brash, loud women.

    Entertainment Weekly

The movie’s treatment of its source material is clever. (B)

    The Hollywood Reporter

The picture is not dull, exactly, just mundane, marked by unimaginative plotting, cut-rate villains, a bland visual style and a lack of elan in every department.

    Variety

[Boden and Fleck] have brought off something exciting, embracing the Marvel house style and, within that, crafting a tale with enough tricks and moods and sleight-of-hand layers to keep us honestly absorbed.

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, a U.S. Air Force pilot whose an Air Force whose DNA fuses with that of an alien, and she’s thrust into the middle of an intergalactic conflict. The cast also includes Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Jude Law as Mar-Vell, Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer, Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, and Ben Mendelsohn, Lashana Lynch, Algenis Perez Soto and McKenna Grace in as-yet-undisclosed roles.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck from a script they wrote with Liz Flahive, Carly Mensch, Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Captain Marvel arrives March 8, 2019.
