    Synopsis

From the bestselling author of Threads that Bind and Hearts that Cut comes a brand-new compulsive romantasy about a girl obsessed with the dark and the shadowy magical prince she falls in love with, perfect for fans of Holly Black and Laini Taylor.

The dark has come alive . . .

Six years ago, vicious creatures began to crawl out of the dark crevices of the world, and with it Sascia’s fascination with the darkness was born. Now eighteen, that fascination has become an obsession, and while exploring an area known for its connection to the Darkworld, Sascia sees a person climb out of the darkness. But Nugau is no ordinary person, they’re a genderfluid elf prince with one mission . . . to kill Sascia.

Except, the second time they meet, Nugau is younger and doesn’t recognise Sascia. And the third time, Nugau stumbles out of the darkness with poison running through their veins, expressing their undying love for her.

Piecing together the puzzle, Sascia makes two shocking the timelines of her world and Nugau’s are not linear, and she is inexplicably enmeshed in a war between humanity and elves. But with their worlds at battle, is it worth fighting for each other . . . ?

    Review

From the bestselling author of Threads That Bind and Hearts That Cut comes Moth Dark, a lush, time-twisting romantasy that proves the shadows can be just as alluring as they are dangerous.

Six years ago, monsters began clawing their way out of the world’s deepest cracks. With them came Sascia’s fascination with the darkness — a fascination that, by eighteen, has tipped over into obsession. When she ventures too close to the Darkworld, she sees the impossible: someone climbing out of the shadows. That someone is Nugau, a genderfluid elf prince sworn to kill her. The next time they meet, they’re younger and don’t even know her. And then, suddenly, they’re stumbling out poisoned, whispering their undying love. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be hooked the moment you realise the timelines aren’t running straight — and neither are the emotions.

Romantasy is everywhere right now — it feels like every week there’s a new trilogy launching with moody covers and angsty taglines. But Moth Dark genuinely stands apart. It gives you the magic, the danger, the brooding romance — all the things we come for — yet it does so without falling into the same patterns. The fact that this is a standalone is huge. No waiting years for closure, no cliffhangers to stew over. Just one complete, haunting story that manages to feel epic and intimate at the same time. Honestly, I didn’t realise how refreshing that would feel until I got to the last page.

The pacing mirrors the story’s themes. At first, it’s slow and atmospheric — a bit like stepping into a candlelit room where you need a moment to adjust your eyes. But once it takes off, it takes off. I tore through the second half, needing to know how the pieces fit together, and Hatzopoulou keeps the tension sharp without ever losing the heart of the story.

Let’s talk romance, because I know that’s what a lot of romantasy readers are here for. If you’re expecting smut, this isn’t that kind of book. Instead, it’s built on yearning, tension, and the sheer inevitability of two people colliding across fractured timelines. And for me, that made it so much more powerful. There are moments between Sascia and Nugau that ache in the best way, the kind that stick with you long after you close the book.

Hatzopoulou’s prose is vivid but approachable. She makes the shadows feel alive and dangerous, and then turns around and gives you lines of dialogue that cut right to the heart. More than once, I found myself stopping just to savour a sentence — even as the plot was dragging me forward at full speed.

Whether you’re a seasoned romantasy fan or just testing the waters, Moth Dark is a perfect choice. It has the scale and sweep of a multi-book saga, but the focus and intensity of a single-volume story. By the end, I felt like I’d lived inside a whole world, and I didn’t want to leave.

    Verdict

Moth Dark is a romantasy that doesn’t just stand out — it blazes. In a genre overflowing with endless trilogies and cliffhangers, Kika Hatzopoulou delivers a rare gem: a complete, time-twisting epic contained in a single volume. It’s a story where shadows breathe, timelines fracture, and love refuses to obey the rules. Sascia and Nugau’s bond isn’t built on smut or cheap thrills — it’s raw, aching, and unforgettable, the kind of romance that crackles with inevitability.

If you’re a fan of Sarah J. Maas, Rebecca Yarros, and Laini Taylor, then this book gives you everything you’ve come to love from the genre: a world brimming with danger, a mystery that keeps you guessing, and characters who burn themselves into your memory. The pacing grips harder the further you go, and by the finale, you’re caught in a storm of emotion that hits as hard as any multi-book saga.

Moth Dark is proof that a standalone can feel just as massive, just as heart-stopping, as a sprawling series. Bold, haunting, and impossibly tender, it’s the kind of story that sticks to your ribs and glows long after the last page.
