    Synopsis

This facsimile edition features 122 classic comic strips and features many classic characters, including Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus, Pig Pen, and many more. Join them as they navigate their way through school, first crushes, the complexities of baseball, and the world of the forever unseen grown-ups and their crazy rules.

    Review

Since 1950, the Peanuts gang have continued to win over fans young and old. Whether its thanks to the comics which still get made to this day, the Apple TV animated shorts or the 2015 movie from Blue Sky Studios, they all stick to the template and style Charles M. Schulz first created all those years ago. A style that is just as endearing now as it was back in the 50s.

The stories in Peanuts comics are always very simple and straightforward. It’s always the various manners in which the characters react to these problems and try to fix them which is where the humour and heart of the writing always comes to the forefront. You’re The Greatest Charlie Brown is no exception as the book takes selected cartoons from As You Like It, Charlie Brown Vol. II and gives them a new lease of life. These are classic stories from the late 60s era of Peanuts, so you can expect nothing but pure Schulz’ mastery here.

The strips on display here are wonderfully humourous as one would expect. From jokes that last just a single page to mini stories that deliver multiple jokes after the other, this selection is a really good one to showcase what makes Peanuts such a well loved series. Some of the book’s funniest moments come from the exasperated yells of Linus and Lucy either during or just after one of their many debates, mostly regarding Linus’ beloved blanket. The cartoons do throw in some genuinely hilarious visual gags in the form of facial expressions or over-exaggerated movements that make specific moments just bit funnier.

One criticism some may have with this book is that there is little in the way of new material here. If that’s what you’re after then I’d recommend the recent Peanuts books such as Snoopy: A Beagle of Mars which a new continuations of Charles M. Schulz creation. As these are cartoons from Peanuts’ heyday, there is a good chance many have read these stories before either in their original form or in a different book that also collected various comic strips from the series. This critique will vary from person to person depending what you’re looking for but it’s still something to take into account if you plan on reading You’re The Greatest Charlie Brown.

If you’re a fan of Peanuts then you’ll get exactly what you’d expect with this collection of comic strips. Each strip is full of the charm and lighthearted humour we’ve all come to love from the gang over the years and even to this day, it doesn’t disappoint.

    Verdict

You’re The Greatest Charlie Brown offers a solid selection of classic Peanuts comic strips that will never fail to warm your heart and make you laugh.
