Paramount Pictures presents IF in UK cinemas from May 17, 2024.

    Synopsis

From writer and director John Krasinski, IF is about a girl who discovers that she can see everyone’s imaginary friends — and what she does with that superpower — as she embarks on a magical adventure to reconnect forgotten IFs with their kids.

    Review

IF, directed by John Krasinski and starring Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming, is a delightful and imaginative film that captures the wonder of childhood. The movie tells the story of a young girl named Bea (played by Cailey Fleming known for her role as Judith from The Walking Dead) who after an intense change in her life, gains the ability to see everyone’s Imaginary Friends. This sets her on an adventure to reconnect these forgotten IF’s with the children who created them.

Ryan Reynolds plays Cal, a man who shares the same ability as Bea who reluctantly helps the IF’s and becomes Bea’s ally in her journey. Reynolds brings his infamous characteristic wit and warmth to the role, creating a sincere and engaging partnership with Fleming. Their chemistry on screen is one of the film’s highlights showing both actors flawlessly bounce off each other.

Cailey Fleming is captivating as Bea, delivering a lead performance that is both heartfelt and spirited. Her portrayal of Bea’s wonder and determination anchors the film, making her journey believable and relatable. Fleming shines bright as the lead in the film, showing a range of emotions which tug on your heart strings regardless of your age.

John Krasinski not only directs but also stars as Bea’s father, adding a layer of familial warmth and complexity to the story. His presence enhances the film’s exploration of family dynamics and the importance of nurturing imagination.  Seeing in interviews his goal for the film and even creating a character based on an incident with his own daughter created a story that wears its heart proudly on its sleeve. It’s written very clearly by a loving parent wanting to make their own child smile.

The supporting cast include the voices of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Louis Gossett Jr., and Steve Carell.  All of them bring a diverse array of imaginary friends to life. Each friend is unique and vividly portrayed, reflecting the incredible creativity of children’s minds. Absolutely none of these voice over roles feel ‘phoned in’ or sounding like an inexperienced actor trying voice acting work.

Visually, IF is a standout treat. The special effects are seamlessly integrated, making the imaginary friends and their whimsical environments come alive in a believable and enchanting way. They all stand out with their unique designs but are masterfully blended into the real world as if they were filmed on the set itself.

The story’s pacing keeps the audience engaged, blending moments of excitement with touching emotional beats. While at times it might stumble with its pace, I was gripped until the end credits regardless.  Just the idea of the story alone had my childish imagination burning bright.

IF is more than just a family film; it’s a celebration of imagination and not forgetting where you came from and what you dreamt of as a kid. In a world where children’s films are often hammed down and produced simply to keep a child’s mind busy, IF offers a refreshing and hopeful perspective. It reminds viewers of the magic that exists in the everyday and encourages them to hold onto their dreams and creativity.

    Verdict

IF is an absolute delight to experience.  John Krasinski has crafted a pure, beautiful and endearing story that plays across all your emotions!  With perfect casting in both the lead roles and the voices for the flurry of Imaginary Friends littered throughout.   The movie flawlessly navigates through the hearts of all the viewers and makes you believe in Imaginary Friends again, even for a little bit.

I am an ex Royal Navy sailor who loves all things geek. I have a strong admiration of anime as well as western television shows and movies. From a young age I was into video games as well as TV shows, often spotted in front of a screen somewhere. My goal is to become a screenwriter/director one day and left the Royal Navy after 9 years to better pursue that dream of mine.
