Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are celebrating today as Spider-Man: Homecoming has opened to an estimated $257m worldwide.

Opening in first place in North America the film has taken a reported $117m. Opening to $50.86m on Friday (including around $13m from Thursday previews) the film pulled in a further $37.15m on Saturday. Rounding out the weekend the web sling took in an estimated $29m. Around $10m of that gross comes solely from IMAX screenings.

$117m is not only around $20-$30m above studio estimates but it is also the second highest opening ever for a Spider-Man film. The top spot goes to Spider-Man 3 with $151.1m.

Internationally the film began its rollout on Wednesday. Though several markets are still to open throughout the summer it’s already off to a great start. Grossing an estimated $140m across 56 markets it will easily top the chart worldwide for the week. Deadline is reporting top markets include South Korea ($25.8m), Mexico ($12m), the UK ($11.8m) and Brazil ($9.1m).

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

Starring Tom Holland, Marisa Tomei, Robert Downey Jr., MIchael Keaton. The film is directed by Jon Watts from a screenplay by Watts, John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein and others. Spider-Man: Homecoming is in UK cinemas now!
