Aquaman is finally in cinemas across the globe. Around 70 territories reported huge box office takings for the latest DC Comics movie across the weekend.
All eyes were, of course, on its North American opening which had estimates ranging from $60M all the way up to $80M.
Well the weekend is over and the box office receipts have been counted and Aquaman has performed exactly as expected. Early estimates report that the Warner Bros. release has taken $67.4M. That figure is bang on expectations and puts the film on track for over $100M across the five-day holiday weekend.
That figure doesn’t take in to account the $4.7M taken during Amazon’s special preview screenings. If we factor in this amount the film has opened with a stellar $72.1M.
Internationally the movie took a further $91.3M this weekend. According to BoxOfficeMojo Aquaman is tracking as the highest grossing film in the DC Universe. Current estimates show the film as +22% higher than Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, +52% higher than Justice League and +86% ahead of Wonder Woman.
China remains the top international market with a total gross of $232.8M to-date. Worldwide Aquaman has now grossed $482.8M with many expecting the movie will cross $700M by New Years Day.
