In major news dropping straight out of San Diego Comic-Con, publisher Oni Press has officially announced Scott Pilgrim Ex: Dawn of Metal Scott #1. The upcoming release marks a huge milestone for the franchise as creator Bryan Lee O’Malley’s first return to drawing a new Scott Pilgrim comic since the original series wrapped 16 years ago.
The standalone one-shot serves as a prequel to the Scott Pilgrim EX video game, expanding the beloved universe after the original comics story concluded. Dropping on November 11th, the 24-page release features a main cover by O’Malley alongside a complete 16-page story introducing a major new antagonist named Metal Scott. Readers will also get a glimpse into O’Malley’s creative process through a selection of behind-the-scenes extras included in the issue.
Reflecting on the decision to return to his most famous creation, O’Malley admitted that the gravity of the project didn’t hit him right away.
“When I was asked to create a minicomic for SCOTT PILGRIM EX, I quickly said yes without considering the implications, only when I started writing and drawing it did I realize this would be the first new Scott Pilgrim comic in 16 years. It’s only a trifle, but returning to Scott’s Toronto really did feel like coming home.”
The timeline picks up long after Scott and Ramona successfully navigated the gauntlet of Ramona’s Seven Evil Exes and their mastermind, Gideon Gordon Graves. With peace settled over Toronto, Scott and Ramona are enjoying life as a happy couple, while the Exes have largely moved on from their past obsessions. However, that hard-won tranquility is about to be shattered as Metal Scott emerges as a fresh threat to test the heroes once again.
Since debuting in 2004 with Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life, the Eisner Award-winning and New York Times best-selling graphic novel series has stood as one of the most influential pop-culture phenomena of the 21st century. Chronicling 19-year-old Scott Pilgrim’s romantic and literal battles, the series transformed into a multi-medium powerhouse.
It previously inspired Edgar Wright’s acclaimed 2010 feature film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World—starring Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Brie Larson, and Chris Evans—as well as Netflix’s award-winning 2023 anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off!, which reunited the entire feature film cast and retold the story from a uniquely different perspective.
Fans attending San Diego Comic-Con can catch O’Malley in person during the “Oni Press: The Countdown to 30 Years” panel presentation in Room 28DE. The panel features O’Malley alongside creators Tyler Crook, Tradd Moore, Curt Pires, Juan Gedeon, and Christian Ward, as well as Oni Press leadership including President & Publisher Hunter Gorinson and Editor-in-Chief Sierra Hahn.
Scott Pilgrim Ex: Dawn of Metal Scott #1 (ONE-SHOT) will be released on 11th November.
