Synopsis
Gotham City is a powder keg, and Poison Ivy is the match! The air is full of anger, pain, and despair as things go from bad to even worse. The chopping block is calling out for Mayor Pamela Isley. Can Ivy’s faithful underlings save her from herself, or will the city swallow them whole first?
Review
Has power gone to her head, or has she always been like this? Ivy’s reign over Gotham City as the newly elected mayor continues to be exactly what you’d expect: dramatic, murdery, and scandalous. The pot is starting to go from a simmer to a boil, as each move she makes seems to turn her into everyone’s enemy. We see posters of her with “liar” written across them, people openly turning against her, and it’s one thing after another.
What’s fun about this issue of Ivy is the connection to Harley Quinn #63. Here, Harley and Ivy’s relationship is discussed by Janet and co, and it’s genuinely sweet hearing them talk about Harley and Ivy, how they’re soulmates, and how that scares Ivy, even if she refuses to admit it. In contrast, we know they’re on a break, Ross and Rachel style, and in Harley Quinn #63, Harley is taking it… well. A cute mental breakdown, splitting into two versions of herself and going a bit unhinged feels like the normal breakup process, right?
The streets of Gotham are a mess: police brutality, crime, you name it. We see firsthand what that looks like, and the injustices taking place. I mean, it’s Gotham, it’s expected. But the implication is that Ivy’s reign isn’t going well, which seems to be a running theme. The last time we saw Ivy, the Order of the Green Knight…
We get a little cameo in this issue, which genuinely made me giddy. I won’t spoil it, but it was a fun one. We also get some nods to locations and events taking place outside of Ivy’s comic, which is great. This has been something I’ve wanted more of for quite some time, and it’s definitely appreciated.
I will say that the cover for this issue is by far one of my favourites. It has such a cool aesthetic and POV. The story is a little on the lighter side. Some might call it a “filler”, but in my eyes, it’s all valuable. Here, we learn more about the world, the story at large, and how all the characters are navigating Ivy’s reign as mayor. It’s not the boom pow issue you might expect, but it does deliver what it needs to: cameos, story, plot, and mystery.
Verdict
When all is said and done, issue #46 is very Janet and side-character focused, which some might not enjoy, but I got a real kick out of it. It’s more of a story-building issue, which I am always down for, because the payoff is usually worth it. As I said earlier, these issues have been building towards something larger, so it’s a great time to be in this world and reading this comic run.
