Synopsis
Oy vey! I been facing off against my latest foe, the Monochromatic Man, and lemme tell ya something, this guy ain’t messing around. He’s turning my world into some kinda Dutch angle nightmare! But if that ain’t bad enough, I got the whole dang GCPD after me too.
Review
Issue #63 is a wild one. For starters, I love a Mario Kart reference, and the cover having a “Where is the banana peel?” comment absolutely took me out. So funny. So referential. So Harley.
Harley being split into two personalities, the bright pink annoying one and the Dark Knight-inspired one (or, as it’s titled, the Harq Knight), feels like the living embodiment of that pink-and-black house meme. This issue introduces a guy called The Monochromatic Man, and one of his catchphrases being “Anything you say or wear will be used against you” is exactly the kind of sass I not only want, but also crave. So, to say I am a fan of how this issue kicks things off would be an understatement. More of this unhinged camp tone, please.
As we know, Harley and Ivy are doing a Rachel and Ross and are currently on a break. In this issue, Harley is clearly struggling to come to terms with that. Her relationship with Ivy has been quite pivotal, both on screen and in the comics, for a number of years now. Sure, they’ve had their ups and downs, but this feels bigger, and you can really feel that impact here. I mean, Harley has had a breakdown, split into two people (The Substance style), and now one is pink while the other is a Dark Knight knock-off. Sounds like an average breakup, right?
If you aren’t reading Poison Ivy right now, I’d suggest you tap back in. The past five or six issues have kicked off a fresh story with Mayor Ivy as the focus, and you can see some of that playing out here and what it means for their relationship. I also know, having spoken to Neil, who covers the Batman comics on Get Your Comic On (which you can check out here), that DC is heading into a big comic event, and all of these stories are starting to connect. It’s all coming to a head, and it’s quite exciting.
That final page leaves Harley in quite an unusual predicament, and I have no clue how she’s going to bounce back from it. But, in true Harley fashion, I’m sure she’ll laugh, punch, and bite her way out of it.
Verdict
Overall, Issue #63 is a fun issue that spends a lot of time setting up the bigger things to come. That said, it’s still an entertaining and enjoyable read in its own right, packed with plenty of laughs, some surprisingly emotional moments, and enough chaos to remind you exactly why Harley remains one of DC’s most entertaining characters.
