The Horror of Godzilla #1 is written by Ethan Parker & Griffin Sheridan (Marvel Zombies, Kill Your Darlings) and published by IDW Publishing. Artwork is by Tristan Jones (Event Horizon, Aliens) with letters by Tom Napolitano. Main cover art (left) is by Tristan Jones.

The Horror of Godzilla #1 will be available from July 29, 2026, in comic book stores and on digital platforms where all good comic books are sold. Grab your physical copy from Forbidden Planet or digitally from Amazon Comixology UK.

    Synopsis

A terrifying look at Godzilla’s first attack! Tokyo, 1954. As the country begins to look toward its postwar future, two scientists start an experiment in the Pacific Ocean. It is meant to change everything… and it will.

Come now, reader and bear witness to the incredible horror of the King of the Monsters. There are no heroes. There are no survivors. There is only the wrath of Godzilla.

This standalone four-issue miniseries serves as a prequel to the Kai-Sei Era while also being perfect for fans of Godzilla: Minus One, Shin Godzilla and Godzilla (1954).

This comic experience puts you on the ground during the kaiju’s first attack.

And as readers will soon discover, they’ve never seen a Godzilla attack quite like this one before…

    Review

Horror of Godzilla #1 is a heart-pounding debut that plunges readers into the action during one of Godzilla’s earliest attacks.

For the last seven decades, Godzilla’s film and comic interpretations have varied widely, from campy fun to terrifying, city-stomping mayhem.

If you ask me, Godzilla works best when the King of the Monsters is, at his core, a monster. Not a hero, a protector, nor dancing on an alien world, but a beast of immeasurable destructive power capable of wiping out the human race.

When Godzilla was devised for the original 1954 film by Tomoyuki Tanaka, Shigeru Kayama, and director Ishirō Honda, he represented the deadly horrors of the atomic bomb and the carelessness and ignorance born from humanity’s thirst for godlike control. While the character of Godzilla has been on a rollercoaster of tones and styles since ’54, in recent years, we have seen a welcome return to this nastier, more brutal version.

    The Horror is Here!

Ethan Parker, Griffin Sheridan, and Tristan Jones tap into classic, visceral fear with their new miniseries, appropriately titled Horror of Godzilla!

They have presented one of the most frightening and horrifying depictions of Godzilla I have ever read.

After seventy years, it is no easy task to find new angles to keep a character like Godzilla fresh. Parker, Griffin, and Sheridan have achieved that here. This isn’t just monster fun! It is a story that pushes the boundaries of what you can expect from Godzilla across any medium.

Issue #1 keeps you on the edge of your seat from the first page. Not only is it a strong script that moves rapidly, but it also taps into horror in ways readers will not see coming. And Tristan Jones’ gritty style is some of the best work I have seen in a new book in a while.

The art flawlessly amplifies the script’s sense of dread and powerlessness as Godzilla emerges. With its tense, at times claustrophobic close-ups and hypnotic depictions of Godzilla, the panels will linger in your mind long after you have closed the book. This is the mini-series you will not want to miss.

    Verdict

Horror of Godzilla #1 is off to a chilling and electrifying start. This is Godzilla like never before, one that goes beyond the terror of an indestructible force, and frightens you to the bones. Truly, this is the horror of Godzilla. Buckle up, readers, you’re in for a ride.
