Capcom Announces ONIMUSHA: WAY OF THE SWORD Release Date and Drops Surprise Demo

Capcom has officially broken a two-decade silence for one of its most beloved cult-classic franchises. During PlayStation’s State of Play on the 2nd June, the publisher revealed that Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the first all-new entry in the series in 20 years, will officially launch on September 25, 2026.

The dark fantasy action game is headed to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Windows. In a surprise twist that will surely delight fans eager to slice through demons, a free playable demo has been released on all platforms alongside the immediate opening of digital pre-orders.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword returns to the series’ roots, blending historic Japanese lore with dark supernatural elements. The story follows the legendary samurai Miyamoto Musashi as he fights to defend Edo-period Kyoto from a brutal demon invasion. Armed with a mystical Oni Gauntlet, Musashi utilizes supernatural speed and strength to combat the Genma garrison.

    Play the Demo Today

The surprise demo allows you to experience the game’s combat firsthand. Players will get to explore the historic Kiyomizu-dera Temple and engage in a heated, climactic duel against Musashi’s fated rival, Sasaki Ganryu.

As an incentive for early testers, anyone who completes the demo will receive a special “Kubi Akari” charm as a bonus when the full game launches in September. Capcom noted that while this early demo might not fully reflect the final product’s performance, an official PC Benchmark tool will be released in the future to help PC players gauge how the full experience will run on their setups.

    Pre-Order Details and Special Editions

Pre-orders for the title are live starting today. Anyone who reserves a copy—regardless of the version—will receive the “Sealed Curse” sword skin and a “Lion Dog” charm. The game will be offered in three distinct packages across physical and digital storefronts:

    • Standard Edition: Available both physically and digitally, containing the base game.
    • Deluxe Edition: A digital-exclusive release that bundles the base game with additional cosmetics and specialized charms for Musashi.
    • Premium Deluxe Edition: The ultimate digital bundle, adding extra cosmetics for Musashi, unique outfits for his allies, and an in-game digital soundtrack on top of the Deluxe Edition content.

Both the Deluxe and Premium Deluxe tiers will also come packaged with extra yet unspecified pre-order rewards.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword drops on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Windows on 25th September 2026.

I am an ex Royal Navy sailor who loves all things geek. I have a strong admiration of anime as well as western television shows and movies. From a young age I was into video games as well as TV shows, often spotted in front of a screen somewhere. My goal is to become a screenwriter/director one day and left the Royal Navy after 9 years to better pursue that dream of mine.
