Paramount Pictures releases The Naked Gun in UK cinemas from August 1, 2025.

    Synopsis

Only one man has the particular set of skills…to lead Police Squad and save the world!
Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. (Liam Neeson) follows in his father’s footsteps in THE NAKED GUN, directed by Akiva Schaffer (Saturday Night Live, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping) and from producer Seth MacFarlane (Ted, Family Guy).

    Review

The prospect of reviving a beloved comedic franchise like The Naked Gun always carries a heavy burden of expectation, especially when the original star, Leslie Nielsen, is irreplaceable. Yet, The Naked Gun (2025) doesn’t just manage to stand on its own; it charges forward with a confidence and comedic precision that makes it a genuinely delightful surprise. This film is a solid return to form, boasting a talented cast, humor that mimics the vibe from the original films, and a refreshing commitment that feels like a return to the long-gone satire and spoof comedies.

From its opening moments, The Naked Gun (2025) immediately establishes that it understands its history. The humor is a relentless, rapid-fire assault of visual jokes, absurd non-sequiturs, and perfectly timed one-liners that fans of Police Squad! and the original trilogy will instantly recognize and adore. It’s a glorious dive back into a world where every background detail is a potential punchline, and the main characters deliver lines upon lines of utter ridiculousness with unwavering sincerity. The film’s pacing is on point too, never lingering too long on a joke, ensuring that if one doesn’t land, another three are already picking up the slack. It’s a full-blooded embrace of the chaotic, intelligent silliness that defined the originals.

A significant part of the film’s success lies squarely with its solid cast. Liam Neeson, stepping into the shoes of the iconic Frank Drebin, is nothing short of brilliant. A questionable casting choice at first due to his lack of comedy in his filmography, Liam in his own words ensures his comedy is not trying to be funny. He doesn’t attempt a mere impression of Leslie Nielsen, but rather embodies the character’s inherent obliviousness and unwavering conviction with his own unique, deadpan persona. Neeson’s commitment to the bit, no matter how outlandish, is a comedic masterclass. He is perfectly complemented by Pamela Anderson, who delivers a truly funny performance, showcasing impressive comedic timing and a natural charm that makes her a standout. The ensemble cast, including familiar faces and new additions, all play their parts perfectly, creating a cohesive comedic unit that amplifies every gag.

Perhaps the most commendable aspect of The Naked Gun is its fearless re-embrace of satire and spoof comedy. In an entertainment landscape often criticized for its cautious approach to humor (often relying on outdated memes the internet had long since forgotten), this film is a breath of fresh, unadulterated air. It bravely takes aim at modern culture, social norms, and even the cliches of modern cinema with a sharp, unapologetic wit. This isn’t just about cheap laughs; it’s about using exaggeration and absurdity to highlight the ridiculousness of reality. It feels like a much-needed declaration that this genre, once a staple up until the mid 2000’s, is back in full force, proving that intelligent, fearless comedy can still thrive and resonate with audiences who are hungry for something genuinely bold.

While The Naked Gun is a triumph of comedic filmmaking, it doesn’t quite hit the elusive top tiers such as the original Naked Gun or Airplane! There are fleeting moments where a gag might not quite stick the landing, or a particular plot thread feels slightly less inspired than the overall brilliance. However, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise uproarious and thoroughly enjoyable experience. It’s a testament to its quality that it leaves you wanting more, eager for another dose of its unique brand of hilarious chaos.

    Verdict

The Naked Gun is a brilliant, side hurting comedy who is not afraid to offend in the name of laughter.  With a solid cast and Liam Neeson proving his comedic timing is almost down the millisecond of perfect, The Naked Gun is a fantastic trip to the cinema with your friends who will no doubt be quoting the movie for years to come!

I am an ex Royal Navy sailor who loves all things geek. I have a strong admiration of anime as well as western television shows and movies. From a young age I was into video games as well as TV shows, often spotted in front of a screen somewhere. My goal is to become a screenwriter/director one day and left the Royal Navy after 9 years to better pursue that dream of mine.
